Shawnigan Lake is 8 km long and is located approximately 48 km (30 mi) north of Victoria. It’s a popular destination for outdoor recreation including waterskiing, boating, fishing, swimming at numerous local and provincial parks, picnicking and camping. Other activities include golf, hiking and cycling. In total there are 14 government cared for parks along the lake.

Shawnigan Lake School is on the shores of Shawnigan Lake and occupies a wooded 400-acre property. The school founded in 1916 is a private school with approximately 35 buildings. Primarily a boarding school with 90% of its students attending the school as boarders, Shawnigan School has 480 students in this coeducational school and attracts students from mainly North America but has a foreign student body comprising from over 30 countries.
If 1 gas station, no large shopping malls, not even a large grocery store, a few small restaurants/ cafes all within 25 minutes of Victoria appeals to you, then this is the place for you. Shawnigan is perfect for starting a family, nearby 5 – 10 min) is the Kerry Park Recreation Centre that has a hockey, lacrosse, curling, soccer and baseball fields. There is an elementary school in the Shawnigan Beach Estates and a short bus ride has the local self-paced high school.
